Polly Alt (“the Extension”) is committed to protecting user privacy. The Extension is designed to assist web developers and accessibility advocates by generating image alternative text using Google’s Gemini API.
2. Data Collection and Storage
No Developer Data Collection: The developer does not collect, track, log, or store any personal information, browsing history, or user data on external servers.
Local Storage: The Extension stores user-configured settings—specifically your personal Google Gemini API key and processing preferences—locally within your browser’s secure sync storage (chrome.storage.sync). This data never leaves your device except to authenticate directly with Google’s API services.
3. Third-Party Data Transmission
When you initiate an image scan or alternative text generation, the Extension transmits the following information directly to Google’s Gemini API:
The selected image (as a URL, Base64-encoded string, or SVG vector code).
Surrounding paragraph text from the webpage to provide contextual accuracy for text generation.
This data is transmitted securely over HTTPS directly to Google (generativelanguage.googleapis.com) strictly for processing and returning alternative text suggestions. Please review the Google Privacy Policy to understand how Google processes API data.
4. Permissions Usage
activeTab / content_scripts: Used exclusively to inspect DOM elements on the active webpage to locate missing alt text and apply visual highlights.
storage: Used solely to save your Gemini API key and user preferences locally.
contextMenus: Used to enable right-click shortcut actions for image inspection.
downloads: Used to allow you to save your generated alt text queues as local .csv or .txt files.
